Mondello- Heavenly blues on the Mediterranean

by Heidi Obermeyer

Let’s take a visual vacation, my friends. Get out the sunglasses, dust off those sandals, pull out the beach towels. It is OCEAN TIME! And my oh my is it glorious.

Amazing, eh? Mondello is the closest beach to Palermo, where I was staying in Sicily. Mentioned for just a few sentences in my guidebook, but highly recommended by all the Italians we chatted with during my first few days in the city, it is beautiful. The beach only about 30 minutes away from the city center by bus (tickets are ~3 euro) and is well worth the trip. There’s a few “private” areas on the beach where you can pay to rent a chair and sit under umbrellas, but we just set up camp on the public beach that was full of burnt Italians and people selling cheap trinkets under the sun.

Otherwise, not many more details to give- we ate some gelato, sat in the sun, and enjoyed ourselves immensely as we walked around afterwards taking photo after photo of the lovely clear water. On the way home we picked up some Panelle (fried chickpeas) in bread as a snack- super filling and delicious after a few hours in the sun.

After seeing how nice Mondello was, I really want to get back to the Mediterranean and explore more someday- maybe in Greece or Turkey. The beaches are just so nice! Does anyone have any European beach recommendations?
